When city voters approved the construction of a giant "monolithic dome" to house an elementary school gym and band room, they thought they would get an inexpensive, if unconventional, structure.

While not specifically Dome related you must remember that what is innovative today usually becomes the everyday of tomorrow...

Helping Build Designs That Are 'Cool'
Cool design creates hot profits, and although really great design is an art rather than a craft, the E-VaN project has developed some best-practice design tools to help companies maximise their potential. E-VaN aims to usher in a new wave of design that allies form with function.

Portland's Tryon Creek State Natural Area is not only an unlikely place for an art exhibit, but also perhaps an unnecessary one. After all, how could any artist hope to compete with the color, texture, scale and variety of the surrounding forest?

From the Gulf:

In Gulf Cove, no place like dome

GULF COVE -- Something has really caught the eye of Gulf Cove residents: a new home construction site at the corner of Gallagher Boulevard and Gent Lane.

It's not just any new home plan. This home is a geodesic dome made of two spheres, somewhere from between 25 to 30 feet high, said Bob Kibort, construction superintendent for Creative Contracting Solutions out of Sarasota.

It began in 1993 as a utopian vision: to end homelessness in downtown Los Angeles by welcoming the down-and-out into a small urban community of 18 fiberglass domes.

Buckytubes and Carbon Nanotubes - A Nanotechnology Building Block, How To Make Them, History, Properties and Applications

Just as the key building block to life on earth is the carbon atom, carbon is the key to one of the most promising branches of nanotechnology. Much of the current research and commercialisation of nanotechnology relies on tubes, wires and balls made from carbon atoms. All are known by a number of names. The carbon based tubes can be carbon nanotubes, buckytubes and very long tubes are often referred to as nanowires. The balls are known as fullerines or buckyballs.

Welcome to the future. Extra rooms, banquet halls (even entire living quarters) built by an Ashland company specializing in geodesic domes

Ever feel like you need a light, airy, spacious structure in your backyard for parties or wedding receptions, for kids to rough-house in, for yoga or an art studio, maybe a class — or just to get away?
A little old but still an interesting dome, plus it's almost in my neighborhood of Yachats Oregon

Local dome home open for tours
Christened Cooper Dome, the four-level, steel-reinforced concrete Monolithic Dome home is located at 1010 Hanley Drive in Yachats. The top two levels, which comprise 3,700 square feet, are dedicated to living areas and include multiple decks with a beautiful ocean view. The bottom two levels are for cars and a coach. The entire exterior of the dome is covered with cedar.

OBSERVATORY REVIEW; A Human-Centered Cosmos in Domes to the Stars

Walk into the central rotunda of the expanded Griffith Observatory -- the Los Angeles landmark that is to reopen Friday after being closed almost five years and undergoing $93 million of reconstruction -- and gaze up at the domed ceiling. You will see what 70 million visitors have glimpsed since the observatory opened in 1935, high above the city's ever-expanding grid and sprawl: stern Jupiter grasping his thunderbolt, Atlas bearing the weight of the Zodiac, Mercury soaring, and Venus reclining. These are the heavenly bodies in their original mythological incarnations: gods and goddesses deploying stupendous and mystifying powers.

Arizona State University To Dismantle 1962 Gold Dome

In Tempe, Ariz., preservationists are dismayed by Arizona State University's plans to strip a former bank of its rare geodesic dome and demolish the 1962 structure, one of only a handful of such dome-topped buildings left in the country.
Federal Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency

A tax credit can provide significant savings. It reduces the amount of income tax you have to pay. Unlike a deduction, which reduces the amount of income subject to tax, a tax credit directly reduces the tax itself. The final rules and forms to clarify which products and services qualify for the tax credits will be developed by The Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You must refer to the final IRS rules to determine what qualifies for the tax credit. We will link to this information as soon as it is available.
